Webinar Details
In this insightful webinar on Nose Work/Scent Work handling, participants explore the critical difference between supportive handling (helping your dog succeed independently) and interfering handling (unintentionally hindering the dog’s natural scenting ability).
The core message is clear: Scent work is a dog-led activity, and the handler’s primary role is to provide safety, space, and calm guidance without becoming a distraction or crutch. In other words, you are the area support staff and dog driver.
Handlers often cause more problems than they realize through subtle actions. The goal is teamwork, where the dog drives the search with its superior nose, while the handler manages logistics, reads body language, and tries to stay neutral enough to avoid cueing or pressuring the dog. Sometimes, the dog communicates by asking for help. The handler needs to be able to assist without over-taking the search. We will explore the different ways of supporting vs. interfering with our dog’s search.
