Brush of Harmony is a 60-minute, hands-on introduction to the history, philosophy, and meditative art of traditional Chinese calligraphy with the Zhengdao Chinese Language Association. Through live demonstration, cultural storytelling, and guided practice, participants will experience calligraphy not only as an art form but also as a discipline that nurtures mindfulness, focus, and creative expression. The program is designed to welcome all ages and requires no prior experience.
Program Highlights
The session unfolds in five segments:
Opening & Welcome (5 min) — Introduction to Zhengdao Chinese and framing of calligraphy as art, history, and mindfulness.
Introduction to Chinese Calligraphy (15–20 min) — Cultural and historical context, the Four Treasures (brush, ink, paper, ink stone), and an overview of major script styles.
Live Performance (20 min) — A live brush-writing demonstration accompanied by traditional music, with explanation of the characters' symbolic meanings.
Hands-On Practice (20 min) — Participants receive brushes and magic practice paper and are guided through writing selected characters, with individualized support from Zhengdao staff.
Closing & Appreciation (5 min) — Reflection, key takeaways, a group photo, and the presentation of a commemorative calligraphy artwork to the library.
