Join us for Week 4 of Discovery Center’s USA 250 Summer Programming as we explore the American Midwest through American Gothic: The Life of Grant Wood by Susan Wood, illustrated by Ross MacDonald.
This engaging picture-book biography introduces young readers to Grant Wood, the Iowa artist behind one of America’s most recognizable paintings, American Gothic. Follow Wood’s journey from his rural Midwestern childhood to his travels abroad and back home again, where he discovered inspiration in the landscapes, people, and communities of the Midwest. Through his art, Wood celebrated the hardworking spirit and everyday lives of Americans, helping to create a uniquely American artistic style.
After the story, families can participate in hands-on activities inspired by Midwestern culture, creativity, and artistic expression. Together, we’ll explore how art can tell the story of a place and the people who call it home.
