Indigenous Arts: Beadwork for Youth

Join Art Reach for two engaging workshops that celebrate diverse artistic traditions.

First, the "Indigenous Arts: Beadwork for Youth" course, led by Anishinaabe artist Chyann Haas, invites children aged 8-12 to explore the rich beadwork tradition of the Anishinabek people. Over two sessions on July 16 and 23, participants will engage in a brief history lesson and learn the art of sewing beads onto fabric using pony beads to create unique designs. All supplies will be provided, and students should be comfortable with needles.

In parallel, "Dye Me a Medallion Quilting," designed for ages 16 and up, features instructor Tanya Ehrsam guiding participants through a two-part workshop to create a striking 3-yard mandala quilt top. On July 16, students will learn how to dye fabric with fiber-reactive procion dye, and on July 23, they will piece together their quilt tops. Participants must bring 3 yards of white cotton fabric, while dye, patterns, and instructions will be supplied, along with sewing machines available for those in need.

Both workshops will take place in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach, located at 111 E. Broadway in Mount Pleasant. Note that active membership is not required for registration, but members receive a 15% discount on classes.
