Details:
The exhibitions "Sound of Water: Feminine Expressions of Fluidity" and "Journal of Therolinguistics" at Descanso Gardens offer immersive experiences exploring the connections between nature, art, and communication.
"Sound of Water," running from June 20, 2026, to January 3, 2027, features works by six Japanese women artists—Emiko Aida, Miya Ando, Yumiko Glover, Mineko Grimmer, Yuko Kimura, and Ayomi Yoshida—who explore the multifaceted nature of water through paintings, prints, and sculptures. This exhibition, curated by art historian Meher McArthur in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Japanese Garden, invites viewers to reflect on their relationship with water amidst global climatic changes.
Meanwhile, "Journal of Therolinguistics," open from March 21 to July 5, 2026, transforms the Boddy House into a research center examining non-human languages and communication across species through the works of seven international artists: Aistė Ambrazevičiūtė, Alice Bucknell, Audax M. Gawler & Pri Bertucci, Lucio Arese, Marianne Hoffmeister Castro, Nicole Brugger, and Paige Emery. Curated by Oscar Salguero, this exhibition encourages visitors to engage with the expressive connections among plants and animals as a form of ecological kinship.
Both exhibitions, supported by the Perenchio Foundation and an endowment from Heather Sturt Haaga and Paul G. Haaga, Jr., with the former also partnering with the Japan Foundation, Los Angeles, are open daily from 10 am to 4 pm, with entry included in the admission or membership fee.
