Aztalan: Mysteries of a Native American Town

For adults. Robert Birmingham is an archaeologist, writer and lecturer in the University of Wisconsin system. He is also the former Wisconsin State Archaeologist. Join us as Robert discusses Aztalan, the site of a Native American town located on the Crawfish River and inhabited by people called Mississippians beginning about 1050 A. D. A sophisticated and densely populated society, Aztalan was mysteriously abandoned in about 1250 A. D. This presentation will describe the site and its history, highlighting recent archaeological discoveries. Robert is the author of eight books on archaeological and historical topics as well as numerous scholarly articles. His most recent book is the 2025 Ancient Effigy Mound Landscapes of the Upper Midwestern North America, co-authored by Dr. Amy Rosebrough. Now retired, he continues to write and research from his home in Madison, Wisconsin and serves as the executive director of the Friends of Aztalan State Park. Registration is required.
