Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary is a 400-acre non-profit refuge located in Poolesville, Maryland, dedicated to providing permanent sanctuary, care, and rehabilitation for neglected, abused, or abandoned farm animals and wildlife. Founded in 1996, the sanctuary's mission is to offer a safe haven for animals that have nowhere else to go, many of whom have been rescued from cruelty cases or industrial agriculture. They house a diverse range of animals, including pigs, horses, cows, goats, sheep, chickens, and turkeys. The sanctuary relies entirely on public donations and the support of over 100 volunteers and staff to maintain its operations and provide for its residents. Poplar Spring also focuses on educating the public about the humane treatment of animals and promotes compassion through various outreach efforts. Visitors are welcome by appointment for tours, where they can interact with the animals and learn their stories. The sanctuary hosts annual events such as a "Run for the Animals" 5K and a "Thanksgiving with the Turkeys" potluck to raise funds and awareness.
