Raise Your Own Luna Moth Caterpillars

The Michigan-native luna is a large, beautiful member of the giant silk moth family. Join us to learn how to help the wild population while also experiencing an intimate connection to its life cycle.

Jim McGrath of Nature Discovery will deliver a presentation on the luna moth's life cycle and ecology. Then, each attending household will have the opportunity to take four fertile eggs or young larvae home to raise! Bring a small, clean, dry jar to transport the caterpillars.

Detailed care instructions will be provided; all you need is access to walnut or hickory tree leaves. The luna larvae will spin cocoons before the end of September. Moths will emerge next June. You can then release them after dark so they can breed with the wild population.

Registration is required and begins Tuesday, July 21st at 9am online, by phone, or in person at the Information Desk. Sign-ups close one hour before the program starts, or when registration is full.

Seating begins 15 minutes before the event start time.
