Details:
Join us at the Howell Carnegie Library for "Copy the Constitution," a community event aimed at reclaiming the foundational language of democracy by hand-copying the United States Constitution. In light of the often convoluted nature of today's political discourse, we invite participants aged 14 and older to help reconnect with the core promises of the Constitution. This collaborative project will divide the 7,600-word document, including its 27 amendments, among attendees, who will copy their assigned sections by hand and display their efforts in the room. Once collected, the handwritten pieces will be reassembled and read aloud, fostering a deeper kinship with the original writers and thinkers of our democracy.
The event, celebrating America's 250th anniversary and partially funded by a gift from the Carnegie Corporation, highlights the vital role of libraries in supporting democratic values. Light refreshments will be served, and registration is required starting June 1 at 9 am—closing one hour before the event or when full. Participants can enter through the Grand River or Clinton Street doors but must exit through Clinton Street afterward. Please arrive 15 minutes early, and if unwell, we kindly ask you to stay home. Note that library staff may photo or videotape the event for promotional purposes.
