Sylvester Pierce, a prosperous businessman, made his fortune as the owner of the S.K. Pierce and Sons Furniture Company, leading Gardner, Massachusetts to earn its nickname, "Chair City."
In the late 1880s, Pierce decided to build a mansion that reflected his status in society. The resulting 7,000 sq. ft. marvel featured 10 bedrooms and was constructed with meticulous detail by a crew of 100 men over a year and a half. The hand-carved moldings and intricate cornices throughout the home showcase the incredible craftsmanship dedicated to this masterpiece. The mansion has hosted many illustrious guests, including former President Calvin Coolidge, Bette Davis, P.T. Barnum, and Norman Rockwell, and served as a gathering place for the Freemason Society.
While Sylvester, his wife Susan, and their son had grand dreams for this unique mansion, tragedy struck when Susan mysteriously succumbed to a bacterial illness shortly after they moved in. After a year of mourning, Sylvester married Ellen, 30 years his junior, with whom he had two more children. Sylvester passed away in 1888, leaving behind his new wife and their three sons. After Ellen’s passing years later, the three sons squabbled over ownership of the mansion and the family business. The Great Depression severely impacted their fortune, ultimately leading the youngest son, Edward, to take control of the mansion.
