Camp Hendon is a medically-supervised camp for children with Type 1 diabetes in Kentucky, Southern Indiana, and the surrounding areas. At Camp Hendon, we give children with diabetes a life-changing experience that empowers them to take control of their unique journey. We achieve this mission through two, one-week summer camp sessions for over 150 children with diabetes between the ages of 8-17. Since our founding in 1965, Camp Hendon has given thousands of kids with diabetes a chance to have a fun, safe, and medically supervised camping experience. The “Camping Experience” is transformative and adds joy, hope, and confidence to young lives. Lifelong friends are made and perceived limitations of life with diabetes fade away. The focus is on fun, but the lessons learned are critical to long-term success. Children who have access to quality diabetes management education at a young age can reduce their risk of diabetes-related complications and often display greater resilience in coping with their diabetes. Camp is a child-friendly atmosphere where healthy habits are reflected by adult role models, most of whom are also living with diabetes.
