Artist-in-Residence Salon

Details:

The New York Theatre Workshop's Artist-in-Residence Salon invites audiences to explore innovative new works during their Open Studio sessions, featuring a diverse range of performances developed during a week of studio time. On July 24, *Mystical Tether*, co-created and composed by Britton Smith and Satchel Lee, presents a poignant narrative of a queer Black grandson and his grandmother, using songs and text to explore themes of communal healing through Black church rituals and mythology. Also on that day, *Disputed* by Michael Breslin unfolds as a musical inspired by Marivaux's 1742 comedy, examining love, betrayal, and identity through a fantastical social experiment involving four individuals raised in isolation. On July 30, the program showcases *The Book of Mountains and Seas* by Yilong Liu, which follows Raymond, a father grieving his son's death, on a pilgrimage with his son's former boyfriend to revisit every restaurant reviewed by his son, revealing rich insights about memory and loss. Additionally, *The Center (The Hamlet Project)* by Murielle Tarrant reimagines Shakespeare’s tragedy within an Urban Native American context, addressing the complexities of community and cultural representation in 1980s New York City. Lastly, nicHi douglas presents *Untitled Funk Shaw Play*, a vibrant adaptation of Shaw’s work that narrates a young Black girl's musical quest for a higher power, blending humor and spiritual exploration. These works reflect a commitment to storytelling that examines identity, community, and the human experience.
