Santa Margarita Water District (SMWD) is committed to enhancing local water reliability and reducing dependence on imported water by developing sustainable, innovative water infrastructure. One of the District’s most impactful projects is the San Juan Capistrano Groundwater Recovery Plant, which plays a vital role in treating local groundwater to supplement the region’s drinking water supply.
This state-of-the-art facility extracts water from the San Juan Groundwater Basin and uses advanced treatment technologies—such as filtration and reverse osmosis—to produce high-quality drinking water that meets or surpasses all state and federal standards. By tapping into this local resource, the plant strengthens our region’s self-reliance and drought resiliency.
