Gallery Exhibit for July-October- Patent Models: A Celebration of American Invention In partnership with Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington, Kennett Library will exhibit a special selection of patent models from Hagleys one-of-a-kind collection. The spirit of ingenuity characterizes America. Since its founding, the United States has been a nation of inventors searching for creative solutions to problems and striving to create better ways of doing things. During the Golden Age of Invention of the last half ofthe 19th century, a tidal wave of human creativity and invention transformed everyday lives. From 1790 to 1880, inventors seeking patent protection submitted small-scale models of their invention to the U. S. Patent Office. Historically, the models demonstrated their usefulness and uniqueness. Today, the models not only represent the story of American innovation and enterprise but present an opportunity to highlight the unique stories behind the lives of the inventors themselves. The exhibition features fifteen models that explore the creative ideas and energies of diverse inventors from across the United States. These innovations represent industries ranging from communications and transportation to home furnishings and personal care. Some industries, such as grist milling and vulcanization of rubber, were cornerstones of the local Chester County economy. In recognition of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a reproduction of a patent document signed by George Washington will be on exhibit from July 1 through July 8. Patent Models: A Celebration of American Invention is open on the first floor of the Kennett Library from July through October 2026. This program supports Arts Culture Literacy as defined by Kennett Library and inspired by PA Forward.
