Workshop 2: Building Community Through Collaborative Mural Making - Building the Mural
In this hands-on workshop, participants work together to bring their shared vision of community to life by creating a large collaborative mural. Artist, Jaylin Stewart, demonstrates techniques for projecting and sketching a composition, building depth and perspective, layering acrylic paint, and combining charcoal and paint to create texture and atmosphere.
Participants trace the projected mural design onto a large canvas before collaboratively painting streets, homes, storefronts, parks, trees, sidewalks, and gathering spaces. Using acrylic paint and charcoal, they add color, texture, and details inspired by the stories and ideas shared during Workshop One.
To complete the mural, participants incorporate the mixed-media figures they created in the previous workshop, arranging them throughout the neighborhood to tell a unified story of community, connection, and belonging.
The workshop concludes with a group reflection and celebration, inviting participants to share what they see in the finished artwork and how it reflects their collective memories, experiences, and vision of home.
