Workshop 1: Building Community Through Collaborative Mural Making - The Design Process
In this interactive workshop, participants explore what makes a community feel like home while helping design a collaborative neighborhood mural. Through guided conversation, participants reflect on the places, people, and traditions that shaped their lives, sharing memories of meaningful community spaces and imagining what they would like their shared neighborhood to include.
Artist, Jaylin Stewart, facilitates a collaborative planning session, sketching ideas as the group discusses important buildings, gathering places, activities, and symbols that represent joy, hope, healing, and belonging. These ideas will inform the mural design for Workshop Two.
Participants then learn how artists use figures to tell stories through posture, movement, clothing, and color before creating their own mixed-media community members using painted paper, construction paper, acrylic paint, markers, and other materials. Figures may represent themselves, family members, friends, neighbors, pets, or imagined community members.
Each participant finishes by writing a short reflection answering, "What makes a community feel like home?" Their artwork and reflections will become part of the collaborative mural completed during Workshop Two.
