The National Wild and Scenic Rivers System was established by Congress in 1968 “to preserve certain rivers with outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values in a free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations”. In December of 2014, Vermont joined the list of states containing federally designated Wild and Scenic Rivers, when an extensive multi-year study of the Upper Missisquoi and Trout Rivers culminated in a congressional designation.
