Red-headed Woodpecker (c) Anne Craig All ages and birding abilities welcome! Join Evergreen Audubon on the second Monday of each month from March through August for a bird outing along the front range! This month, we’ll meet at 7:30 AM near Wigwam Creek, in Southern Jefferson County, close to the town of Deckers. Details and car-pooling ideas will be provided to registrants before the event. Wigwam Creek runs through an area nearly decimated by the Hayman Fire in 2002 – one of Colorado’s largest forest fire at 138,114 acres. The area still has some ponderosas, with scattered willows and shrubs, and lots of openness, appealing to a variety of swallows, flycatchers, bluebirds, and sparrows. The area’s large diameter snags can attract two woodpecker species that are uncommon in our part of Colorado, the Lewis’s and Red-headed Woodpeckers! The trip will involve driving along dirt roads and stopping at several spots in the area. A few stops could involve a short but easy hike down to Wigwam Creek. What to Bring: Binoculars Spotting Scope (if you have one) Weather-appropriate clothes Water and snacks/lunch This event is FREE, but registration is required. All are welcome, but we strongly encourage participants to be Evergreen Audubon Members. (Join Now) This event is filled when we have 12 registrants.
