Saluda Library Speaker Series – Aerial Insectivores

Some birds spend much of their lives in the air, skillfully catching insects on the wing. In this presentation, we’ll explore the fascinating group of birds known as aerial insectivores and the remarkable adaptations that make them masters of flight. Featuring species found across Western North Carolina including the Chimney Swifts, Barn Swallows, and Common Nighthawks, we’ll take a closer look at how wing shape, feeding strategies, and behavior help these birds hunt in midair. Along the way, discover how insect loss and changing landscapes are shaping the future of these remarkable birds and what we can do locally to help keep our skies full of life.
Sarah grew up in Brevard, NC, and spent much of her childhood exploring the natural spaces surrounding her home. This time spent observing and falling in love with her local ecosystem contributed to her drive to pursue a career in conservation. She is beyond thrilled to start her career here in Western NC as Community Engagement and Education Associate with AmeriCorps Project Conserve at Conserving Carolina.
Sarah graduated from UNC Wilmington in May 2025 with master’s degrees in public administration and environmental science, building upon her knowledge of environmental management and policy from her undergraduate studies at UNC Asheville. She looks forward to using her skills in these fields to advance Conserving Carolina’s mission. She is also deeply passionate about all things wildlife, particularly birds, which can be seen in much of her work as a long-time volunteer and leader with local Audubon chapters across the state.
