Cinema From the Margins: BARFI!

Details:

Barfi is a hearing and speech-imparied man who falls in love with Shruti. Shruti loves Barfi, but rejects him and marries someone else in order to lead a “normal” life. Years later she discovers that Barfi has found love in Jhilmil, his childhood friend who was abandoned by her family as she is autistic, leading Shruti to rethink her own marriage. Through this swirling romantic comedy set in Darjeeling, India, the trio learns that love can neither be defined nor contained by society's definitions of normal and abnormal. This movie is not rated and has a runtime of 2 hours and 31 minutes Cinema From the Margins is a curated film (and television) viewing series that seeks to highlight stories from often overlooked communities and people of diverse identities, with an emphasis on subjects that are relevant to our current time. Films in this series will start with a brief introduction prior to the movie and will be followed by the option to casually discuss afterwards. Our July pick celebrates Disability Pride Month!
