Enslaved Musicians in Colonial Connecticut Presented by Markus Rathey, PhD

Their names were Cuff, Jack, and Cato. They were violinists who lived in the decades before the American Revolution. While forgotten today, their musical skills were noted by the newspapers of the time, which described them as good players. Their instruments were so essential to them that they took their violins on one of the most dangerous journeys imaginable: an escape from slavery in New England. This talk will tell some of their stories and bring to life the music they played during their captivity.
