Details:
The New York native, now living in Buenos Aires, has spent his career building entire worlds inside his songs. He inhabits characters with startling empathy. Lighthearted ballads and adulterous love songs, dirges and diatribes that skewer politics, prejudice, war, and religion, and yes, the occasional comic monologue from a cow stuck in a barbed wire fence. Each song is a little world unto itself, framed in haunting acoustic melodies that linger long after the last note.
Shindell’s path to that craft has been anything but ordinary. He has inhabited a Zen Buddhist monastery, busked the streets of Paris, and spent the pandemic out on the wide-open Argentine Pampa, reading, writing, taking long walks, and tending the garden. That cross-border, cross-threshold life informs everything he writes. He moves through experience as both immigrant and emigrant, illuminating the human condition through narrative song.
His most recent album, Careless, was meticulously recorded over three years in New York and Buenos Aires. Eleven songs given the time, space, and latitude to truly stretch out. While his signature acoustic guitar work is still front and center, Shindell also plugged in more this time around. “The wider sonic and dynamic range of the electric has been a real inspiration. Rejuvenating,” he says.
Innovative, original, and occasionally spiritual, his songs champion the downtrodden, exalt the disaffected, and wax empathetic for those lost to society’s fringes. He returns to the road now for a limited run of performances, and OUR stage is one of them.
This is the kind of show where you stop talking, start listening, and find yourself thinking about it long after the drive home.
