Art Class: Custom Felted Handbag

Fashion and function meet in this two-part, felted handbag course. In addition to the aesthetic choices like shape and surface design, we will go deep into the mechanics of creating a felted wool purse with no seams or sewing required. With Megan's nearly 20 years of experience creating both functional and fine art fiber pieces, you will be guided every step of the way and leave with your own custom hand-felted bag as well as the confidence to create more seamless, functional, three-dimensional wet felted objects.
Some of what we will learn:
-How to make a resist/template that will felt to the size and shape you want.
-How and when to add a functional pocket
-The creation of loops for straps
-Surface design elements that make your bag your own
Previous felting experience is helpful but not necessary. All skill levels are welcome. This course will include years' worth of Megan's trials and errors distilled down so that you will have a successful and enjoyable wet felting experience. There will be standing required for the second class as we do most of the felting of the body of the bags but you are welcome to take breaks.
All of the necessary materials for the bag will be provided to ensure the highest quality wool that will felt with the structural integrity needed for a functional item. You will also be given a beautiful, adjustable leather strap made by a local, Amish artisan so that your finished piece can be worn cross body or as a shoulder bag.
Before class you will receive a list of a few supplies to bring that are common household items such as a bath towel. Everything else will be provided for you.
