In recognition of Juneteenth, Stuhr Museum will host a program as part of the Hard History series: “Slavery in Nebraska: An Essential History.”
This presentation explores Nebraska’s pivotal—and often overlooked—role in both the expansion and eventual abolition of slavery in the United States. It examines the region as a political battleground during the sectional crisis leading up to the Civil War, the experiences of enslaved people on the Overland Trails and within Nebraska Territory, and the routes and impact of the Underground Railroad.
By engaging with this essential history, we gain a fuller understanding of Nebraska’s complex and shared past. As our community reflects on the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026, this program offers an opportunity to recognize and honor the long and ongoing struggles for freedom that have shaped our history.
This program is included free with regular daily admission.
