Details:
The Carsey-Wolf Center, in partnership with the Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Music, recently hosted a special fiftieth anniversary screening of *Chulas Fronteras* (1976) and the short film *Del Mero Corazón* (1979), both directed by Les Blank and celebrating Mexican-American music and culture. The restored films highlight the rich traditions of musica norteña and conjunto tejano, showcasing the vibrant stories and resilience of borderland communities through music. A pre-screening performance by Gallo Armado emphasized contemporary themes in corrido music. The event also featured a discussion with filmmaker Maureen Gosling and Juan Antonio Cuéllar, an expert in archiving Spanish-language music.
Additionally, the GreenScreen 2026 Student Film Premiere spotlighted eco-conscious themes through three student-produced films: *Unlikely Cast*, *Smog Valley*, and *The Wave Home*. Each film addresses environmental issues, from conservation efforts by local fishermen to the impact of air pollution on marginalized communities and marine wildlife rehabilitation. Sponsored by the Carsey-Wolf Center and the Department of Film & Media Studies, this event aimed to promote awareness of environmental challenges while highlighting innovative storytelling in media. A reception followed both events, fostering community dialogue about culture, environmental justice, and connection through storytelling.
