Novel Jazz Septet

The Novel Jazz Septet, celebrating its 22nd anniversary in 2026, is a talented ensemble of Maine-based musicians with over two centuries of combined musical expertise. The band features skilled musicians including Barney Balch on trombone, who boasts an extensive background playing with notable artists and bands across the country; Bill Manning on drums, a Berklee College of Music graduate with over 30 years of experience; Jim Lyden on bass, who has deep roots in the local jazz scene; David “Quick” Clarke on guitar, who began his musical career at a young age and has played in various bands; Mickey Felder on piano, who has transitioned through genres while remaining a steadfast jazz performer in Maine; Nathaniel Johengen on reeds, a talented young saxophonist with a focus on jazz and a growing presence in the music scene; and Ed Mitchell on trumpet and flugelhorn, known for his wide-ranging performances and collaborations in various styles.
