The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) National Fertilizer and Environmental Research Center (NFERC), located in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, was a national laboratory focused on research, development, education, and commercialization. Its work encompassed fertilizers and related agricultural chemicals, emphasizing economic and environmentally safe use. The center also explored renewable fuel and chemical technologies, alternatives for environmental and waste problems, and technologies supporting national defense. Projects included pesticide waste minimization, treatment, and disposal, as well as the development of waste treatment and site remediation technologies for agricultural chemical dealers. The facility was established to leverage existing infrastructure from a World War I munitions plant and utilized TVA's power and water resources. While the center was closed in 2009 and later demolished, its legacy involved significant contributions to fertilizer technology and environmental research.
