Buildings Cause a Third of Global Emissions. Who’s Solving It?

​The built environment accounts for more than a third of global carbon emissions. Solving that problem requires rethinking materials, design, and operations all at once. Cities like Portland are showing what that can look like in practice: embodied carbon policies, a growing mass timber manufacturing ecosystem, and buildings such as the PAE Living Building.
​Decarbonizing a building is no easy task. The emissions span the entire lifecycle, from the concrete and timber used to build it, to how it uses energy over decades of operation. This panel brings together the researchers, engineers, and founders working at each layer of that problem, from the timber in the walls to the efficient energy management.
