What is art therapy?
Art therapy is a mental health activity facilitated by an art therapist. People use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reduce negative stress, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, increase self-esteem and more.
A goal in art therapy is to improve or restore someone’s functioning and his or her sense of personal well-being. It’s an effective treatment for people experiencing developmental, medical, educational, and social or psychological impairment.
Art therapy is widely practiced in a wide variety of settings. This therapy provides an alternative means of communicating for those who can not find the words to express anxiety, pain or emotions. It also provides an opportunity to enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of art making.
The process of creating is the important part of therapy and not the end product of what you created.
Making art is healing and life enhancing. Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation and Cape Fear Valley Cancer Centers recognize the benefits of this therapy and want to provide this extended care for our patients.
