What if simple, everyday movements like opening a jar or climbing stairs didn’t have to come with joint pain?
For millions living with arthritis, everyday movements can become constant challenges.
In fact, more than 54 million adults in the United States are affected by the chronic illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, making it one of the leading causes of disability nationwide.
With cases expected to increase as the population ages, understanding arthritis has never been more critical.
Arthritis is not a single disease, but a term used to describe more than 100 conditions that affect the joints, causing pain, swelling, stiffness and reduced range of motion.
The most common types include osteoarthritis, which results from wear and tear on the joints, and rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy joint tissue.
While arthritis is more common in older adults, it can affect people of all ages, impacting mobility, independence and overall quality of life.
Despite its prevalence, arthritis is often misunderstood or overlooked in its early stages. Many individuals delay seeking care, assuming joint pain is a normal part of aging. However, early diagnosis and intervention can play a crucial role in slowing progression, managing symptoms and preserving joint function.
To help Rio Grande Valley residents better understand arthritis, South Texas Health System is dedicating its latest installment of the Let’s Talk Your Health webinar series to this important topic.
During this live broadcast on the STHS Facebook page, participants will gain insight into how arthritis is diagnosed and learn about today’s most effective treatment options, from medication and physical therapy to lifestyle changes that can significantly improve comfort and mobility.
