La Plata County Humane Society was established as a 501(c) 3 animal shelter in 1971. It was created to provide shelter for homeless animals, to rescue animals in distress, to assist in the investigation and prosecution of reported cruelty and abuse, to attempt to find homes for unwanted animals, and to encourage kindness and responsibility toward all living things through humane education. The Thrift Store was established in 1990 to raise monies for the homeless animals. They sell gentle used good that are donated by our community. We accept donations 7 days a week through our donation center on site. The Thrift Store supports local non-profits in the community by donating clothing, toiletries and vouchers to the Volunteers of America (VOA), La Plata Family Coalition and the Women’s Resource Center. The Shelter & Thrift Store is directed by nine elected board members. In 2000, we added a Medical Director to staff to insure that all animals are health checked, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and have all the care/needs before leaving our facility. Help Us. Help Them. One Paw at a Time.
