The Animas Museum, operated by the La Plata County Historical Society, is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history and culture of La Plata County and the surrounding Four Corners region. Housed in the historic 1904 Animas City School building, the museum offers exhibits, programs, and a research library that highlight the area's indigenous roots, development as a commercial and rail hub, and the lives of its people. It provides insights into early Colorado schools, Native Americans, the Old West, fires, railroads, and transportation, with additional historical structures like the Joy Cabin and Peterson House offering glimpses into pioneer and 1930s life. The museum also engages in outreach programs, community collaborations, and educational initiatives for students.
