Details:
Carnegie-Stout Public Library is proud to host a presentation on the 250 year history of the Declaration of Independence by Loras College Professor of History Kristin Anderson-Bricker, Ph.D. on Thursday, June 4 at 7 p.m. in the third floor Auditorium.
Beginning with the founders, Americans disagreed on the parameters of liberty. Who should have rights? Who gets to decide? Groups from across the political spectrum, including abolitionists, women’s rights advocates, slave owners, white segregationists and civil rights leaders used the Declaration of Independence to push for liberty as they defined it.
To enhance your understanding of how Americans have used this document, Dr. Anderson-Bricker encourages you to read the Declaration of Independence before coming to the talk. Visit the National Archive to read the text and view images of the original document: www.archives.gov/founding-docs/declaration-transcript
