Why is Children's Day celebrated in the USA?
Children's Day is celebrated in the United States to honor the joys of childhood, promote child welfare, and encourage parents to spend quality time with their kids. The US observes this as National Children’s Day on the second Sunday in June.
While several countries celebrate International Children's Day on June 1 or World Children's Day on November 20, the US tradition has evolved through a unique history:
Historical Roots (1856): The concept first started in the US in June 1856 when Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard of the Universalist Church in Chelsea, Massachusetts, dedicated a special Sunday service to baptizing and honoring children.
Presidential Proclamations: Over the decades, dates shifted. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 451 declaring August 8 as National Children's Day. Later, in 2001, President George W. Bush officially designated the first Sunday in June as National Child's Day, which is now widely observed as the second Sunday in June.
Purpose and Celebrations: The day focuses on addressing the physical, emotional, and educational needs of youth, advocating for children's rights, and acting as a reminder for busy families to bond through activities, gifts, and quality time.
The day is meant to recognize that children are the future and ensure their environment is safe, happy, and supportive. To learn more about the holiday's background, you can read more about it on the National Day Calendar.
