The Trinity: John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Civil Rights in African American Memory, Conversation with Dr. Sharron Wilkins Conrad

A striking triptych once displayed in countless African American households, the Trinity typically features Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King Jr. and President John F. Kennedy. Drawing on decades of oral histories, cultural analysis and community memory, Conrad traces the Trinity across several decades, showing how African Americans didn’t merely remember the civil rights movement; they shaped its meaning. The Trinity reveals why Kennedy’s image hung beside King and Christ, while Lyndon B. Johnson, despite signing landmark legislation such as the 1964 Civil Rights Act, remained largely unheralded.
The Museum welcomes historian Dr. Sharron Wilkins Conrad author of The Trinity: John F. Kennedy, Lyndon D. Johnson and Civil Rights in African American Memory. In this book Dr. Conrad reveals how African Americans came to revere John F. Kennedy as a civil rights hero while viewing Lyndon Johnson’s legacy through a more complicated lens. A longtime educator, scholar and former Director of Education and Public Programs at The Sixth Floor Museum, Dr. Conrad’s work at major cultural and academic institutions lends to her expertise on the subject. Dr. Conrad brings a unique perspective to this conversation about leadership, memory and the enduring impact of the civil rights movement. The program includes a conversation and Q&A.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Sharron Wilkins Conrad is a historian of the Civil Rights Movement and its intersection with the American presidency. She is a Professor of History at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth and a Senior Fellow at Southern Methodist University’s Center for Presidential History and previously served as Director of Education and Public Programs at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. Dr. Conrad holds a Ph.D. in Humanities from The University of Texas at Dallas, along with degrees from Penn State University and Howard University. An award-winning author and educator, her work has been supported by major research fellowships, and she remains active in the field through teaching, publishing, and professional service.
