Declaring Independence in Charleston: Text and Context

In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of our nation, The Charleston Museum is pleased to host a series of lectures, each focusing on a different aspect of Revolutionary War history. Join the Museum and co-sponsor, the Huguenot Society of South Carolina, for the next installment in the series on June 23rd.
This talk will celebrate the arrival and the spread of the news of the Declaration of Independence in Charleston in the summer of 1776. Taking a closer look at the declaration broadside printed by Peter Timothy, and on special loan at the Charleston Museum May 30 - August 30, we will explore this crucial text and the remarkable multi-generation printing Timothy family that brought independence to life on paper and within South Carolina. Please join us for this important commemorative occasion that will explore the past as well as the legacy of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.
Registration is encouraged. This lecture is FREE for Members and FREE for the public.
Light refreshments to be served prior to the lecture. Guests are also invited to visit the Museum’s Historic Textiles Gallery to view the original copy of the Declaration of Independence before the lecture.
