Details:
The summer exhibition at the Vermont Supreme Court Gallery, presented by the Vermont State Curator’s Office, will feature Animal, Mineral – Paintings by Heidi Broner. Montpelier Art Walk and Artist’s Reception: Friday, August 7, from 4:30 – 7:00pm / Artist Remarks: 6:00pm. Broner utilizes an "on the fly" photographic process to capture spontaneous compositions which are often used later in her process as foundational blueprints as she crafts her paintings.
The subjects, whether human or animal, at times are staged in urban landscapes or the rocky coast of Maine. Broner reveals a unique narrative that one can interpret independently as a spectator. Animal, Mineral brings together a colorful body of work spanning a 20-year period.
“Colors change, objects are removed or added, invisible atmosphere transforms into something visible. Often, the posture of the worker suggests a less definable and more mythic narrative: peering over the edge of the world, struggling with his own shadow, quietly connecting the intricate threads of communication, or unearthing something unknown. It seems to me that the familiar tasks we all perform have this somehow satisfying resonance.” – Heidi Broner
Heidi Broner is a self-taught artist living in Calais, Vermont. Her interests have led her to work in a wide variety of media: in addition to painting, she has illustrated books, designed and painted murals, created puppets, masks, and set pieces for the opera Frida, and worked for many years with Bread and Puppet Theater as a painter and performer. Broner’s two decades working in granite sheds alongside stone craftsmen has given her a deep appreciation of the skill, patience, and attention to tasks developed by people in the trades.
A colorist by nature and an ardent observer of the richness of the natural world, Broner has lately turned her attention to the beauty and complexity of rock formations. Her paintings have been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums throughout the country.
The exhibition will be on view at the Vermont Supreme Court Gallery from July 14 - September 25, 2026. All artist receptions at the Vermont Supreme Court Gallery are free and open to the public. Food and drink will be served.
