In 2009, a Grand Isle charter captain named Danny Wray had a dream: get 80 kayakers together to chase bull redfish in one of the most productive fisheries on the planet. His wife Kristen handled the logistics. They called it Ride the Bull.
By 2015, 733 paddlers launched into Caminada Pass — the largest kayak fishing tournament the world had ever seen.
Then came the flood of 2016. COVID in 2020. And in 2021, Hurricane Ida — a Category 4(5) monster that destroyed Grand Isle and the surrounding area.
After Kristen passed away from cancer, Danny handed the torch to CCA Louisiana. We continued in her honor.
Grand Isle rebuilt. Bridge Side rebuilt. And Ride the Bull came back — because that's what this island does. That's what these people do.
Now it's your turn.
Ride the Bull 2026 returns to Grand Isle on August 28–29 for the WORLD’s LARGEST KAYAK FISHING TOURNAMENT — a one-day, all-paddle-craft, catch-and-release bull redfish rodeo where first-timers beat veterans, teenagers beat pros, and a woman on a stand up paddle board caught one of the largest fish in tournament history.
Friday night, August 28th, is the Captain's Meeting and Pre-Party — boiled shrimp, live music, and the energy of hundreds of anglers getting ready for the battle ahead!
Saturday morning, August 29th, the air horn sounds, the pass fills with colored plastic vessels, and the bull riding commences.
But even if you never touch a paddle, this is one of the best spectator events on the Gulf Coast. Watch hundreds of kayaks launch at sunrise. See bull reds weighed and tagged live from the pedestrian bridge. Eat boiled seafood food on a Louisiana barrier island. Watch grown adults compete for best costume.
This is the tournament Danny and Kristen dreamed up, re-engineered with conservation at heart. This is the island that won't quit. And this is the weekend that reminds you why Louisiana calls itself Sportsman's Paradise.
