Maine Maritime Museum is thrilled to offer a rare opportunity to meet and hear from Dr. Robert D. Ballard, one of the most accomplished and well-known deep sea explorers in the world. Adventurer, expeditioner, and oceanographer, he is best known for his 1985 discovery of theTitanic, in addition to the German battleshipBismarck, the lost fleet of Guadalcanal, the U. S. aircraft carrierYorktown(sunk in the World War II Battle of Midway) , and John F. Kennedys boatPT-109. One of his most important discoveries was of hydrothermal vents and black smokers in the Galapagos Rift and East Pacific Rise along with their exotic life forms living off the energy of the Earth through a process now called chemosynthesis.
