The Melting Pot, which premiered in 1908, is a story about a Russian Jewish immigrant family living in New York. David and his uncle Mendel are both musicians. David’s goal is to compose a “great American symphony” that encapsulates his hopeful view of America as a land that is welcoming to the downtrodden immigrant. At the heart of the play is David’s Romeo and Juliet-esque romance with Vera, a Russian immigrant who is a Christian.
Characters of The Melting Pot:
David Quixano, m, 20 to 30s. The play's protagonist. A Russian Jewish immigrant and aspiring composer who escaped anti-Jewish violence in Eastern Europe. Intelligent, passionate, idealistic, and deeply committed to the promise of America as a place where old divisions can be overcome. David carries significant emotional weight throughout the play. Ability to play the violin is a plus, but not required.
Mendel Quixano, m, 45+. David's uncle who immigrated to America some years before David did. Warm, humorous, practical, and deeply rooted in Jewish tradition. Mendel provides much of the play's heart and humanity while also serving as a bridge between the Old World and the New. Ability to play the piano is a plus, but not required.
Vera Revendal, f, 20s to 30s. The play's leading lady. Beautiful, educated, and compassionate, Vera is drawn to David's idealism while struggling with secrets from her past. She requires substantial emotional range as her journey moves from romance to crisis and ultimately toward reconciliation.
Kathleen O’Reilly, f, 20s to 50s (thick Irish accent). An Irish Catholic immigrant who serves as housekeeper to the Quixano household. Practical, outspoken, warm-hearted, and occasionally humorous, Kathleen provides moments of levity while also embodying another immigrant perspective on America. A lively supporting role with good character opportunities.
Quincy Davenport, Jr., m, about 35. He is a wealthy, conceited, American-born young man with a callous disregard for people he thinks are beneath him. He is not shy in pursuing his objective of marrying Vera, even though he is already married.
