Joy Luck Club Movie Night (w/ NDAAACI)

Join us for an evening of movie viewing and guided discussion with the North Dakota Asian American Arts & Cultural Initiative (NDAAACI) . Earlier this year MMPL hosted a book talk facilitated by NDAAACI on the novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. This summer we are pleased to present the film adaption of the book. Whether you were able to participate in the book talk or not, you are welcome to participate! If you are interested in reading the book, MMPL has a book club set, and other copies can be requested from the CDLN catalog and Libby. Movie showing will begin at approximately 5:30, and there is no cost to attend. Registration is recommended, but not required. Content warning: This event is intended for ages 18 and up due to sensitive topics presented in the film. It is rated R by the MPAA for mature thematic content. The film contains themes concerning "family expulsion and conflict, rape, child abandonment, parental death, spousal abuse (both physical and mental) , and suicide" (commonsensemedia.org) . While these themes are not necessarily always graphically shown, viewers should be aware of their presence in the film before viewing. The North Dakota Asian American Arts & Cultural Initiative works to provide a platform for Asian American artistic expression and to showcase the cultural traditions of Asians and Asian Americans living throughout the great state of North Dakota.
