Join the Berks History Center for an immersive, all-day journey through the Philadelphia Campaign of 1777, a pivotal series of events that led to the temporary loss of the American capital but helped shape the foundation of the United States. Led by military historian Mike Harris, this guided tour provides expert commentary while traveling to key sites, including Forts Billingsport, Mercer, and Mifflin, as well as the Red Bank Battlefield.
Learn how these forts, along with a chain of chevaux de frise erected shortly after the Declaration of Independence in July 1776, initially blocked British ships from reaching Philadelphia. Explore the dramatic overland campaign that began in June 1777, including the Battles of Brandywine, Paoli, Germantown, Clouds, and Red Bank. Discover how the Continental forces eventually retreated to Valley Forge by December, while British troops under General Sir William Howe spent the winter in Philadelphia.
The day includes a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, with entrée selections to be finalized closer to the trip date. Transportation is provided by Elite Coach. Participants should arrive at 7:30 AM at Boscov’s East Reading Mall (4500 Perkiomen Avenue, Reading), behind the former Fox Movie Theatre, now the Reading Civic Performing Arts Theatre. The bus departs promptly at 7:45 AM, returning at approximately 5:45 PM. Please note that the bus driver tip is not included in the ticket price; an envelope will be passed for collection on the return trip.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to relive a critical chapter of American history with the guidance of a leading military historian.
