Self-Guided Astronomy

Experience the wonders of James River State Park through a variety of engaging activities suitable for all ages. Start your night with Self-Guided Astronomy in the park's designated Dark Sky Viewing area—grab a blanket, pick up a star chart at the visitor center, and explore the night sky with a constellation app. During the day, become a Junior Ranger by picking up a program guide at the Visitor Center, where you can earn an Official Junior Ranger Badge through fun activities, culminating in a special swearing-in ceremony.

Visit the Nature Center to meet animal ambassadors like turtles and snakes, and discover the park's history and wildlife through interactive exhibits. If you're up for a modern-day treasure hunt, stop by the Visitor Center for a geocaching guide, grab a GPS unit or use your smartphone to find hidden caches around the park.

Enhance your adventure with an Adventure Pack filled with outdoor exploration gear, including binoculars and field guides, and receive recommendations for trails based on your interests. Finally, challenge yourself with a Photo Scavenger Hunt—pick up a list of items to find in the park and capture them on camera for a chance to earn a prize!
