Black Loyalist Virtual Tour

Join Prospect Park Alliance for a special virtual tour of the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre and an inspiring exhibit, "The Shirley Chisholm Way: Brooklyn's Blueprint for Change." The virtual tour, held at Lefferts Historic House, delves into the history of the Black Loyalists—African Americans who fought for the British during the American Revolution and sought refuge in Nova Scotia in 1783, fearing for their rights in the new nation. The Centre works to interpret and promote their heritage.

In tandem, the exhibit showcases the remarkable life of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress, highlighting her efforts to break down gender and racial barriers in pursuit of justice for her community. Curated by Barbara Bullard, it features powerful portraits by artist Al Johnson and rarely seen campaign memorabilia. This exhibit is part of Prospect Park Alliance’s ReImagine Lefferts initiative, aiming to explore the legacies of resistance among Indigenous peoples and enslaved Africans, including those connected to the Lefferts family. Both events celebrate the enduring legacies of resilience and activism in Brooklyn, culminating in the installation of a new monument honoring Chisholm in 2027.
