It impacts five counties and 20 municipalities, making this river the life force of the Kansas City metropolitan area. While the headwaters to the south are relatively healthy, consequences of urbanization, like land development and stormwater runoff, negatively affect people, wildlife and landscapes downstream as it reaches the Missouri River.
