ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS

Gain valuable skills using appropriate resources, tools and scientific language to overcome common challenges in plant identification. Through lecture, discussions and hands-on activities, Emeritus professor Shawna Martinez will show you how to identify native plants and to see botanical relationships. You’ll practice using dichotomous keys and be trained to recognize the characteristics so you can identify the most common plant families. This series is a partnership with the Redbud Chapter of the California Native Plant Society and Sierra College’s Natural History Museum.

• Oct. 31 (9am - 1pm) – Basic Floral Structures: Ground Cover and Vines

• Your own drinks/snacks (lunch will not be served)
• Refillable water bottle (there are two water bottle refilling stations inside Sewell Hall)
• Spiral notebook and pens/pencils
• Hand lens (if you have one)
• (OPTIONAL) Recommended book: A Manual for Plant Identification and Classification by Dena Grossenbacher is referenced in the workshops if you wish to purchase online or from a local bookstore it in advance.
