Join us for an informative discussion on the tools, tips, and tricks used to document, clean, and restore headstones in cemeteries. Learn how to safely document headstone conditions, identify appropriate (and inappropriate) materials and cleaning agents, and understand best practices for uprighting and straightening stones. The session will also cover basic techniques for repairing broken headstones and emphasize the importance of preserving history by avoiding any actions that may cause irreversible or permanent damage. This program is great for anyone interested in cemetery preservation, genealogy, or local history.
Our presenter, Andrew Chiki, comes from a long line of people from Athens County. He has a passion for local history, genealogy, and preserving the stories, memories, and places in Southeast Ohio. In addition to his regular work for the City of Athens as the Deputy Service-Safety Director, he also oversees the West State Street and West Union Street Cemeteries for the City.
