Book Talk: I Have This Thing for Flowers

Join us for a captivating Book Talk titled *I Have This Thing for Flowers* with Alysia Li Ying Sawchyn in conversation with Tess Fontaine on Thursday, August 13, from 5:30 to 7 PM. This engaging event tells the heartfelt story of Alysia’s journey through love, marriage, and gardening, sparked by a significant life change when her fiancé broke off their engagement. In an unexpected turn, Alysia married her friend Sarah for health insurance during the pandemic, and as they tended to their garden, their marriage transformed from a practical arrangement into a blossoming love.

Alysia reflects on the metaphorical significance of flowers as representations of the transient nature of youth and love, drawing parallels between nurturing a garden and cultivating relationships. Through her work, she examines various loves in her life, akin to an herbarium of preserved flowers.

The event will feature a book signing by Malaprops following the discussion. Alysia, a creative writing instructor at Bucknell University and former editor of *The Rumpus*, is known for her essay collection, *A Fish Growing Lungs*. Tess Fontaine, a celebrated author of *The Electric Woman* and *The Red Grove*, adds her rich literary background to the conversation, making for an insightful evening exploring the intersection of personal narrative, nature, and art.
