Get ready for a week of cozy, creative fun at our Sewciety Kids Rag Quilt Workshop Camp this summer! This five-day camp is the perfect way for young sewists to dive into the world of quilting through a project that is as forgiving as it is stylish. Students will join Gabi and Julie for a hands on camp and learn to make this fun quilting using the Cottonwood-provided sewing machines. Prerequisite: Sewciety Kids Beginner Workshop. This is where students learn the ins and outs of the classroom sewing machines, classroom safety, and the workings of the classroom at Cottonwood. Students need to take this workshop in order to register for this summer camp. We offer these workshops at various times throughout every month. If you want to register your child for the camp, and they haven't taken the beginner workshop yet, that's ok. Just make sure to have them take one before July! Camp Overview Project: A small, "Quilt-As-You-Go" Rag Quilt. Schedule: Monday–Friday, 3-hour sessions daily. Experience Level: Suitable for new beginners and practiced sewists (Ages 9+) . What You’ll Learn Unlike traditional quilts, rag quilts are made with exposed seams that "rag up" and get fuzzy after washing. Over the course of the week, students will master: Precision piecing: Managing fabric "sandwiches" of cotton, flannel, and batting. Chain Piecing: Learning efficient ways to sew rows of squares together. Quilting Techniques: Practicing "stitching the X" to secure layers without complex machine quilting. Textural Finishing: Using specialized snipping techniques to create the signature shaggy, soft edges. Daily Breakdown Monday: Design your layout and begin cutting fabric Tuesday: Start "stitching the X" on individual blocks to quilt as you go. Wednesday: Join blocks into rows, focusing on aligning seams and managing bulk. Thursday: Complete the quilt top assembly and add the final border stitching. Friday: The Big Snip! Spend the session snipping edges and learning how to "rag" your quilt for maximum fluff. What to Bring:Students need a basic sewing kit, including pins, a seam guide, a frixion pen and a small quilting ruler Fabric Requirements to be purchased separately ahead of camp: Option 1 (a fun scrappy look!) 11 fat quarters -- flannel or cotton or a combination of both! 1.5 yards of coordinating flannel (this will operate as batting, so it's not important to have a pattern for this fabric. Solid is fine) Option 2 (if you have trouble choosing 11 fabrics, this is a nice option to choose fewer fabrics. Still a fun look, just easier to choose only 5 coordinating fabrics) 5 different fabrics: 1/3 yard of each -- flannel or cotton or a combination of both! 1.5 yards of coordinating flannel (this will operate as batting, so it's not important to have a pattern for this fabric. Solid is fine)
