Details:
Join Marilyn Harris for an in-depth look at the Declaration of Independence. Ask almost anyone Who wrote the Declaration of Independence?, and the answer will be Thomas Jefferson. Well, yes, but its much more complex than that. Hear about the contributions of the Committee of Five and other members of the Continental Congress, related documents (some of them even British) , and authors whose ideas and even language went into this iconic document. With its 250th anniversary coming up soon, its time to take another look at what has been called the defining statement of our national identity and the moral standard by which we live as a nation. Since 2010, Marilyn Harris has taught more than 40 classes and lectures at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute on diverse topics, ranging from ancient history to the Titanic to travel lectures. As a confirmed history buff, she is particularly interested in Rhode Island colonial and Revolutionary Era history and is a veteran docent and researcher at Smiths Castle in Wickford/North Kingstown. This event is brought to you by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Rhode Island. OLLI at URI provides learning opportunities to enhance the enjoyment, meaning and direction for adults ages 50+. For more information visit uri.edu/olli or call OLLI at (401) 874-4197. This event is free and open to all.
